I will put this in a bit different category than albums or artist because not all the hits are written by the artist that makes the song famous.

Mine wold be
Niel Diamond: (hundreds of hits by various artists)
Carol King: (words that touch your soul)
Dan Folgelberg: (verses that seem to fit time, space and circumstance)MichaelP39072.6228009259

I really like Neil Young's lyrics... The Tragically Hip are also very unique in their writting. Rush's Neil Perth is pretty out there as well...

Hmmm, a Canadian Trifecta!

Traditional and Anon.

There seems to be a big to do about Who wrote it. In the litigation going on it has been said that the song in various form actually goes back about a century.

There are so many brilliant ones out there...
but one of the greats of the last 30+ years would have to be Billy Joel. Oh wait, he's a piano guy. I'm sure you guys didn't want to hear his name here, eh?
On the contemporary country side of things, check out Phil Vassar's stuff...another piano guy.

Others I like:
Carol King
JT
Joni Mitchell
Willie Nelson
CSN&Y
Van Morrison
and many more...
